Finally back from Batam in the evening on Friday . It has been such great experience being in this year's MSS Overseas Expedition, embarking on the community project in the orphanage in Kampong Melayu Batu Besar in Batam from 10th April (Sunday) to 15th April (Friday). As for me, it was the first time ever stepping into the land of Indonesia . After the 6 days, the feel of not returning to Singapore . In other words, thinking of extending the stay there . Let me recap those things that we covered throughout the whole week .
it's my-way|`
Our jobscope mainly focused on the repair works, including painting, carpentries to the cabinet improving the landscape and setting up a mini library corner for the benefits of the home residents. At the same time, removing the playground, which was the most challenging physical task where I spent most of the time with those energy-sapping acts, hitting and destroying the playground items . Those hard work may end up in high price with those blisters and cramps but I didn really care much since we had to do in a manual way . From my view, all the paricipants were all in high spirits doing those stuff .
If those hard labour were to be done in the day, we took the stress off at night, involved in friendly sports against the village youths . The sportmanship , I hoped, will give more closer bonds between young Singaporeans and the Indonesian counterparts . Table tennis . Sepaktakraw . Those were the friendly games we had . I won't forget that I spend most of the nights hanging out in the warong with the village youths there, playing mahjong . It doesn really call mahjong but it's more to those tai ti, only that the cards were in the form of mahjong cards .
Spent the nights sleeping at Pak Wahab's (the head of the orphanage) house . And somehow felt the experience of waking up damn early, for instance, the Subuh prayers, all thanks to the azan which was played very loudly in whole kampong area through the loudspeaker in the mosque situated just in front of the house .
I even did not expect of getting the great reception from the villagers . The opening ceremony with those traditional hand-drums on the first day . Great time meeting the orphans who somehow can still be happy living under those conditions, sharp contrast to our life in Singapore where Singaporeans tend to get pampered too much and always ask for more here n there . Great time chatting with my new Indon friends . There was also a farewell gathering to recognise our efforts, which fall on the thursday night, where some of Batam high-profile politicians were present, including the Governor from Riau . I even would not forget that night where i joined in the fun, dancing to the dangdut beat in the karaoke held after that gathering . Power!!
Nothing to shop much there although the things were damn cheap .
The trip was such an eye-opening one to me and it changes the negative thought of us thinking that Batam was popular for wrong reasons . Actually, it wasnt . Hmm.. that's the weakness of the mass media nowadays and those readers trusting the media .
Lots of new experiences to be brought along when returning to Singapore on that Friday evening . Experience can't be exchanged with money . If I can't get any special physical item as souvenir to any of you peepz, well let me take this wonderful experience also as a souvenir to share with you all . Love u all peepz .
